Another baby gift :)

As we didn’t know if it was going to be a boy or a girl I used this pretty green shade of yarn with contrasting cream.  I figured I could add pink buttons for a girl and brown for a boy at the last minute.

Well as you can probably guess the baby turned out to be a girl!

I don’t seem to be the best at getting baby clothes the right size.  I’ve can do hats thanks to baby head charts.  But I wanted to try something else for a change (and hats are more of a winter baby gift anyway).

So I used this free pattern from Ravelry – Cluster Yoke Baby Cardigan.  It was easy to follow.  I only made a couple of alterations.  The main one was to keep the clusters throughout the yoke without interrupting the pattern at row 11. I then had to make sure I increased correctly at row 12.  I altered the pattern on the hemline and sleeves too – not really by design – I went too far before starting the clusters and then decided to make the pattern match on both the hemline and sleeves.

Although this was straightforward to make I wasn’t totally in love with the end result.  I think maybe my yarn was too heavy.  I used a cotton so that it can be washed on a high temperature (practical for baby clothes!) but I think it would have been nicer in a more lightweight yarn.  Either the bamboo which I did the cream in, or just using a heavy sportweight instead of dk, with the same hook size.

This was nice and easy and I’d bear it in mind to use again but to be honest I’ll be trying other designs before I make this one for a second time.  Since lots of friends are having babies I’ve no doubt I’ll get the opportunity. :)
